The Offer

After the long wait, apple finally introduced its new devices, the iPhone 5S, the successor to the iPhone 5, and a budget iPhone, the iPhone 5C. No matter, apple might call it a budget device, it never lies in the budget of  majority of the users. It is always a hype, when an iPhone is launched, and everyone wants to own it, but only a few are able to actually afford it, and buy it. But this time, for the Indian users, Reliance made it easier to actually get it into your hands, and complete your urge of owning the new iPhone! Adapting the contract criteria, followed by foreign telecom giants, like AT&T, Verizon, etc, Reliance, just changed the scenario here, which is a great step in the Indian Telecom Sector. In this post, we will discuss, whether, this is worth it or not!

The Plan

The iPhone 5S (16 GB), and the iPhone 5C (16GB), are available at a 24 month contract, where you have to pay Rs. 2999, and Rs. 2599, each month, and own the device! But wait, this is not it, with this monthly EMI payment, you not only get the iPhone in your hands, but you get UNLIMITED Local and national calls, SMS, and Unlimited 3G Data, for each month! This really seems wonderful, right? But, lets see what is the fine print behind the plan.

The Benefits

• If you are a salaried person, and, of course, do not have a hefty amount of 55,000 saved for your iPhone need, this is the best thing, because, it doesn’t even involve a down payment. Just monthly payment of the installments.
• The device will be over GSM, so, it will give you portability over the network, during, or after the contract is over.
• Unlimited Local and national Voice, sms and 3G data usage.

Behind the scene

Having said, that the users will be paying a little amount of Rs. 2999 per month,  for the iPhone 5S, they did mention in the terms and conditions, about the credit card limit issue. Now, what is it?

When you swipe your card for the iPhone, at the reliance store, you need to make sure that you have a limit of Rs. 62,000, standing. BECAUSE, they will be blocking that limit, for you! Which means, that when you swipe your card, Rs. 62000, of your total credit card limit will become unusable, and every month, when you pay the installments, Rs. 2999 will be deducted from the blocked amount?

So, if you feel like, not blocking a huge amount of your credit card limit, this offer is not for you.

The iPhone 5S, 16 GB is available at Rs. 53,500. So, If you buy the device from this offer, you pay Rs. 18,500, more, over the period of 24 months. The 4G LTE is rolling out fast, in all cities of India, and Reliance is also going to introduce it in no time. You, cannot opt for the the 4G LTE network, until your contract with this is over. Yes, this is a term, that reliance mentioned well. RCOM is basically charging Rs. 62,000 for the iPhone 5S, but if you calculate, the amount adds up to Rs. 72,000 for 24 months. That Rs. 10,000 is the interest amount that the bank will charge, over the credit card EMI. So, basically, we are going to pay Rs. 10,000, over nothing. There is a big down payment amount, if you don’t want the 16 GB model, but want to go for a 32 GB one, or a 64 GB Model.

Bottom line

This is a great offer,  but if you look closely at the benefits, and then what lies behind the scenes, it is a tough call to decide.

• You can opt for this, if you want the iPhone, and you know it is not at all possible for you to pay the full amount at once, and don’t really use your credit card much, and don’t care about the limit, go for it, right now!
• But, if you are a person, who doesn’t want to stick to a single network for 2 years, and the credit card limit matters to you, don’t opt for this one.
